The 4th “Science for Society” Congress

On 14–15 June 2026, representatives of the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics – National Research Institute (IAFE–NRI) and the Polish FSDN from the Agricultural Holdings Accountancy Department took part in the 4th ‘Science for Society’ Congress, held at the University of Warsaw under the slogan ‘Society for Science’.

The Congress provided a platform for research institutes, research units and higher education institutions to present their achievements, as well as for discussions on the role of science in addressing social and economic needs. The event was accompanied by an open-air exhibition in front of the Old Library building of the University of Warsaw on Krakowskie Przedmieście.

IAFE–NRI, as a co-organiser of the Congress, presented its scientific, research and expert activities in the fields of agricultural economics, agricultural markets, the food economy, rural development and the Polish FSDN system. At the Institute’s stand, visitors were able to learn about ongoing research, publications and activities carried out for the benefit of the agri-food sector, including in the field of agricultural accounting.

A particularly important point of the congress programme was the participation of the IAFE–NRI Director, Dr Marek Wigier, Professor at IAFE–NRI, in a debate with directors of research institutes and university rectors. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of scientific and research institutions in socio-economic development and the need to strengthen cooperation between the scientific community, the public sector, the business sector and society.

During the main ceremony of the Congress at the Old Library Building in Warsaw, the Director of IAFE–NRI, Dr Marek Wigier, Professor at IAFE–NRI, received the Perspectives of Science Award in the form of a commemorative statuette (pol. ‘Perspektywy Nauki’). The award was presented to the Institute in recognition of its involvement in organising the 4th ‘Science for Society – Society for Science’ Congress and its contribution to the development and promotion of science. The award was presented by a representative of the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

During the Congress, representatives of the Institute also promoted the Polish FSDN system, which is an important, innovative source of data on agricultural holdings. In addition to production and economic data, the system includes environmental and social information. This supports analyses concerning the sustainable development of agriculture and provides a basis for shaping and evaluating agricultural policy at the national and EU levels. IAFE–NRI’s participation in the Congress provided an opportunity to publicise research findings, showcase the Institute’s achievements and engage in discussions with attendees on the importance of science for the development of agriculture, the food economy and rural areas.

We would like to thank everyone who visited the IAFE–NRI stand for their interest in the Institute’s work and for the inspiring discussions.
